Migraine

Symptom

A patient presented in clinic with chronic weekly migraine they’d had for over a year. They managed their condition using prescribed pain killers from their GP, but didn’t like the side effects of the medication, so decided to seek alternative treatment. The migraines were having an impact on the patient’s quality of life, they often had to cancel social events and take time off work.

Treatment

After an in-depth consultation, Annabel diagnosed patterns of disharmony using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) . The treatment goals of the patient were to stop pain and reduce migraines. Annabel initially recommended ten weekly treatments.

Conclusion

The patient’s migraines reduced to three migraines in the first four weeks. After the next six treatments the patient experienced no migraine. Annabel recommended a maintenance treatment every four to six weeks. The patient chose to attend every month as they enjoyed the treatment. They remained migraine free for six months and now only experience migraine once or twice a year, if that.

Chronic neck pain

Symptom

A patient presented at the clinic with chronic neck pain. They’d had it for six months, it had gradually got worse over time and the patient had limited movement in their neck. They were taking painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications, but decided to try acupuncture alongside their current medical care.

Treatment

After a full consultation, Annabel and the patient agreed that the treatment goals were to stop pain and regain movement in the neck. Annabel used a combination of acupuncture and gentle massage to achieve this.

Conclusion

The patient had weekly treatment for five weeks. After just one treatment they had increased mobility which was sustained throughout the treatment plan, after four weeks there was a reduction in pain. After a review, the patient was able to reduce the number of treatments to once a month.
